Art is a way of expressing thoughts and ideas visually rather than verbally (duh, right?) so it stands to reason why most "ordinary" folk tend to shy away from this form of communication in fear that they cannot draw or that people will misunderstand them. I'm going to ask you (if you are the uncreative type) to take a moment to reflect and remember back when you were a kid and your art teacher let you finger paint! For me that was a ultra-fun experience where I could have fun, be artistic and play. Not only finger painting, but art gives you permission to express yourself creatively with spontaneity and without expectations. You can be as creative (and messy) as you really want without any worry! Think about if you were to try this technique now in adulthood where most days you are bombarded with the incoming and have your devices in front of you constantly. Trust me when I say, that MANY studies have been done to prove the value and impact that art can have on your mind and stress levels.
Here are five SIMPLE art techniques that anyone can do today to eliminate their stress
1. Finger painting
You can pick up this kind of kid-friendly paint almost at any big-box retail store! Grab a piece of paper and go to town, don't focus on your technique just dip your hands in paint and start. You will be amazed at how free & invigorated you'll feel!
2. Quick abstract drawing
Pick up a large crayon or Pencil. Most of the time you can easily find these lying around. Then grab a piece of paper and just draw whatever is on your mind currently without worry of proportions or subject.
3. Doodle with a pen while o n the phone
I can't tell you how many times this technique has helped me through some long phone conversations, it really helps you feel better and less exhausted at the end of the call, try it sometime and you won't be disappointed. Let your mind run free!
4. Construction p aper mosaic art
Take different color construction paper and just start cutting it into different shapes and sizes. Then take a glue stick and start pasting it onto poster board. You can even involve your family to make it more enjoyable and a thing you do together. You could brainstorm as a family for what you'd like to create or just go abstract! Remember...no stress! In the end you'll have an art piece that the whole family created.
5. Side-walk chalk art
This art has been around for decades and is very cheap and easy to do. Pick up some kid-friendly (safe) side-walk chalk at your local market and on a nice day go out and just sit draw anything that comes to mind. My kids LOVE sitting and drawing things. Most of the time they can help and the artwork can be huge!
Take these 5 techniques and try one sometime, you be glad you did. Make sure to turn off the TV and hide your mobile phone. You need to take time in your life to eliminate stress.
